FOWELL & WHITE CLAIM THE ACADEMY HONOURS AT OULTON Competitors in the Daily Telegraph Caterham Academy contested their first-ever circuit races yesterday (Sat) at Oulton Park, with Trevor Fowell and Richard White celebrating in the best possible style by winning on their first taste of circuit racing. Academy Group 1 points leader Fowell got the better of pole position man Matthew Draper at the start and was never headed. Although Draper stayed close for much of the race, he was never near enough to challenge: "I missed third gear and he got away from me," explained Matthew. David Gianessi and Gordon Sawyer emerged from the battle behind to have their own duel. "We were swapping places at nearly every corner," said Gianessi after sealing third. Jez Hobbs claimed fifth with a late charge, edging out Ian Davis with a lap to go. Kai Lo and Jonathan Hill duelled for the lead in the Group 2 race after pole man White was slow way. Hill led after a masterful overtaking manoeuvre at the chicane on lap two, with White in hot pursuit as Lo's challenge started to fade. Alas for Hill suspension problems put paid to his victory hopes; he struggled back to the pits to join Lo in retirement. White eased his way through the closing laps with new points leader Donald Lamb closing on him at the finish. Keith Ashworth claimed third on the last lap from Robert Smith, with Martyn Buckley and David Mobbs completing the top six.
ACADEMY RACERS MAKE THEIR TRACK DEBUTS
Quickest driver of the day, and
winner of the Academy Group 1 competition, was London-based driver

tenth of a second fastest than any of his rivals. In Group 2,
26-year-old Essex-based delivery driver Kai Lo was the event victor. Nick Potter of Caterham Midlands, whose team made sure all the newcomers made it to the startline - including one driver who forgot to bring the ignition key for his Caterham - was pleased with the outcome: "It went very well, with nothing more dramatic than the occasional spin, and all the new drivers enjoyed their first competitive event and the great paddock camaraderie with which the Academy is blessed." The Academicians will be back in action again on 10 May, sprinting at Goodwood.
