ROADSPORT & ACADEMY ACES HEAD FOR SILVERSTONE The Motorsport News Caterham Roadsport Challenge enters a decisive stage next weekend (9/10 Aug) at Silverstone, venue for the ninth and 10th rounds of the 14-race championship, with just 25 points separating the top three in Roadsport A and a not much bigger margin in hand for the Roadsport B overall leader. Philip Broad, who stepped up to Roadsport racing this season after winning the Caterham Academy in 2007, is the man in form in the A class with four wins under his belt, including a double top last time out, at Oulton Park. The 23-year-old motorsport engineer from Ely in Cambridgeshire leads former Roadsport champion Gary Halcrow by 10 points, with last year's other Academy title winner, Jon Walker, third overall just ahead of Dax Humberstone. Lewis Hopkins' title hopes took a knock last time out - he failed to finish either of the Oulton races and has slipped to ninth in the title standings. "I fell off in the first race and then, while battling through from the back of the grid in race two and dicing with Toby Dicker, we rounded a corner to be confronted by a spinning car," said 19-year-old Lewis. "I had nowhere to go but into the back of Toby's car and there was a lot of damage." Hopkins' team, Fauldsport, is pulling out all the stops to get him on the grid at Silverstone. "The championship is slipping out of my sights now; my aim is to do the best I possibly can in the remaining races and to hope for the best." Raphael Fiorentino, the London-based racing novice, is defending a 37-point advantage in Roadsport B, thanks to race wins at Croft, Cadwell Park and at Oulton. Amit Patel, himself a double race winner, is his closest rival. Mark Figes at last found the top step of the podium last time out and is likely to prove a Silverstone threat to both Fiorentino and Patel. Silverstone is also the venue for the latest rounds of the Daily Telegraph Caterham Academy. Londoner Trevor Fowell is so far undefeated in Academy Group 1, having beaten all his rivals in the three sprint and hillclimb events and also in the group's maiden race earlier this month. Matthew Draper, brother of Roadsport racer Julien, and David Gianessi joined Fowell on the podium at Oulton Park and look likely to be his main Silverstone threats. In Group 2, Surrey-based airline pilot Donald Lamb maintains his overall lead despite not yet having won an event; he was second in the Lydden sprint and runner-up again at Oulton Park. Kai Lo, Robert Smith and Rich White have done the winning so far, with Jonathan Hill robbed of victory by mechanical problems at Oulton.
