Liz and
ladies join Pudsey on podium
Liz
Halliday and her all-female team helped to raise over £5000 for Children
In Need after taking a podium in Nigel Mansell’s charity karting event
last weekend.
The East Grinstead racer joined fellow lady racers Zoe Wenham, Anna
Walewska, Rachel Green, Rachel Davies, Jenny Anderson, Amy Barker and
Karen Andrews at the Devonshire raceway to finish third overall after
the two, hour-long heats.
The team had looked strong throughout the opener and were well placed
going into the second race where a good result would have seen their
all-important aggregate time promote them to the top of the leader
board.
A cheeky swap of numbers during the interval however saw the ladies
commandeer the machine of former F1 World Champion Nigel Mansell, which
although proving faster, also had the unfortunate upshot of baffling the
timing equipment. The subsequent confusion led to the girls being
classified lower than their performance might have merited but was still
enough to secure a podium finish.
“As a team, we had a great time and it was really fun being with so many
competitive fast ladies!" said Liz. “We all enjoyed ourselves, and at
the same time we were doing something good for Children in Need, so all
in all it was a good day."
“All the girls were quick, especially in the second race after we had a
bit of time in the karts. We all knew it was for charity and obviously
I’m proud that we managed to raise £900 as a team, but when you’re out
there racing, the competitive instinct kicks in and I think we were all
pushing hard to be at the front - we had a lot of fun!”
The event is meant to feature as part of the evening-long entertainment
to be broadcast on BBC1’s flagship Children In Need programme from 7pm
on Friday 14th November. The 28th annual telethon fundraiser will
highlight awareness for society’s deprived and underprivileged
youngsters.
