Masters appoints new technical commissioner

The appointment comes as part of the series’ overall programme of eligibility checking and enforcement. Harris and his qualified colleagues or deputies will be in attendance at all Masters Racing Series events in the UK and Europe, starting at Snetterton on Saturday (29 March).

The latest Masters’ competitors survey showed a wish for increased checks and technical management across all Masters’ series. The appointment of Mike Harris is part of the Series’ response to that feedback.

"Various incidents in 2007, at different historic race meetings, have obvious implications for everyone in historic racing," said Christopher Tate of the Masters Racing Series. "Masters intends to maintain its strong policy of ensuring a level playing field, with comprehensive technical regulations, the right equipment to do the checks and regular policing."

Harris is one of the UK’s 12 MSA Technical Commissioners and has many years experience of eligibility and enforcement across a wide range of motor sport, most recently in a similar senior role within the FIA World Rally Championship.

He is a historic racing enthusiast, and still enjoys regular historic race event scrutineering at his home circuit of Oulton Park. No one man can be expected to be a detail expert in every aspect of every car raced within the Masters’ group, from 1950s saloons to 1970s GPM cars, but Harris will be establishing systems to randomly select cars at any time during a race meeting for checks against FIA papers and homologation forms (where required), compliance with Masters regulations and conformation each entrants’ signed declaration of compliance.
