Welsh Sports and Saloon car Championship

Pembrey Rounds 4,5 &6

To finish first, first you have to finish!

A cold windy and wet Pembrey greeted the drivers in the Welsh Sports and Saloon car Championship as they prepared for rounds 4, 5 and 6. Unfortunately entries were very low with only seven cars out for the weekend. But that wasn’t going to stop Nick Jones from aiming to increase his lead in the Championship.

Race one on Saturday afternoon and Nick had a comfortable start, and maintained his first place in class position all the way to the finish line. Achieving second overall was even better!   Nick was on pole in class for race two on Sunday and with the weather changing almost every ten minutes it was difficult to decide which tyres to run on. Slick dry tyres would be a problem on those parts of the circuit still with standing water so Nick went for  the safer option, wet grooved tyres.

The lead car, a class above Nick, had chosen the slick option which was to prove his downfall, spinning several times and giving the lead to Nick who secured a class and overall win.

Having won race two, Nick was once more on pole for race three. This time in front of two Westfields, both in the class above Nick and much quicker. They soon overtook him but he continued to  hold third place for much of the race. Meanwhile up front the Westfields battled over the lead and eventually took each other out in dramatic fashion, thereby handing the lead to Nick in the dying laps. The race was then red flagged so Nick drove into the pits totally unaware he had won.

So another great class and overall win. His Championship lead now well secured. A good weekend for Nick but sad to see so few entries. As Nick said after race three “It would be so much better to have a full grid. It would mean better racing for the drivers, fans and spectators. Where are all you Welsh Sports & Saloon Car Championship racers?”
