Porsche Carrera Cup Great Britain
Quaife eyeing
title-tilt on Carrera Cup GB return
Phil Quaife is looking to add the overall Porsche
Carrera Cup GB title to his 2006 Pro-Am category triumph when he makes
his return to the UK’s most prestigious one make racing series this
season.
Having spent the past 12 months honing his racecraft around the world in
the F1-supporting Porsche Supercup and the FIA GT3 European Cup, the
Kent-based driver is looking forward to returning to the UK racing
scene.
“It’s good to be back,” admitted Quaife at the last Carrera Cup group
test of the winter at Silverstone this week. “I learned a lot last year
in the Supercup and it was a fantastic experience. My racecraft has
definitely improved, but the biggest lesson was not to waste a second of
track time each weekend. On the F1 package you get very little track
time, so it was crucial to acclimatise to the circuit and the conditions
quickly and optimise the car’s set up.
“Set up is very important when it comes to these cars. The Carrera Cup
is a one-make series, so there isn’t much you can do, but slight changes
to the tracking, camber and ride height can make a big difference.”
Having taken 10 class wins on his way to the Carrera Cup GB Pro-Am title
in 2006, Quaife graduates to the overall championship searching for more
success. “I want to be standing on the podium again this year. My target
is to win the championship, but I don’t underestimate that task as I
know the quality of drivers on the grid. There are some seriously quick
guys out there.”
Fittingly, Quaife is welcomed back to the Carrera Cup GB with a
season-opening double-header at his home circuit Brands Hatch, although
the 22-year old admits it will be quite a change from the tracks he
became accustomed to in 2007! “We’ll be racing on the Indy Circuit and
that’s definitely a lot shorter than the Grand Prix circuits I was used
to last year! But Brands is my home circuit and somewhere I thoroughly
enjoy racing, so that’s an added incentive to do well.”
