SEAT
CUPRA CHAMPIONSHIP
Adam
wins again....and again!
Round 15 & 16: Knockhill
A familiar looking front two rows lined up for the start of Round 16 at
Knockhill with Robert Lawson (Bardon/JHR) keen to not let Jonathan Adam
(Total Control Racing) speed off into the distance from the beginning.
But there was no stopping Adam’s charge from the line and despite a
great start, Lawson had to tuck in behind the local driver as they
headed into the SEAT Curves. There was more action behind them though
with Daniel Welch (Marriott/Welch Motorsport) and Martin Byford (AB
Glass/Z Speed Racing) tangling as they fell into the first corner,
letting Carl Breeze (Blue Chip/Welch Motorsport) and David Green
(Daniels Motorsport) snatch their places. Welch now found himself in 5th
place while Byford also lost out to Jeremy Gumbley (Millionpixeldriver.com/
Welch Motorsport) to continue the race from 7th.
The frantic start showed no signs of letting up either as Welch started
to push towards Green while Byford turned his attentions to Gumbley. But
Byford also had to be wary of Daniel Rowbottom (DRM M-sport) who himself
had Freddy Nordström (Plumbertraining.com/Advent Motorsport) and Andrew
Herron (Brian Herron Plant/JHR) breathing down his neck. Early gaps were
soon closed though when Jamie Ackers’ (Total Control Racing) off at the
John R Weir chicane brought out the safety car on lap 7. Four laps later
though and Ackers’ car was safely out of the way, the drivers crossing
the line for the beginning of the eleventh lap with the tempo was
boosted to high once again.
Welch took advantage perfectly, squeezing on the inside of Green as they
raced down into the first set of corners to take 4th place. It was a
tight squeeze though and Green found himself in a hard place, a tap from
behind putting an end to the driver’s brilliant start. Gumbley and
Byford both made a place up by default, but it left Byford with the same
chasing trio as earlier behind him. And while there was no stopping
Rowbottom from picking a way past him, Byford used the Real Radio
Hairpin to launch his fight back. At the first attempt it didn’t quite
work but on lap 14 Byford hit the brakes late and dragged side by side
with Rowbottom up the straight, keeping his foot planted into SEAT
Curves to take the place. Impressively by lap 19 Byford repeated this
move on Gumbley to take 5th and on lap 23 ended up in another drag race
along the start/finish straight with Welch, which he again won to take
4th place. But with so few laps left there was no catching Breeze in 3rd
spot or the front two of Adam and Lawson.
Welch stuck to Byford’s rear bumper to claim the 5th spot, while both
Rowbottom and Herron eased passed Gumbley for 6th and 7th places
respectively.
Despite Byford’s brave fight back though the day belonged to Adam, a
perfect weekend capped by his second win at Knockhill in a race that he
once again dominated. Lawson was much closer to him in this second race
though, so come the remaining rounds where neither driver has more
extensive knowledge of the circuits than the other, you can expect some
real head to head racing at the front as the champion’s crown gets
closer to their reach.

Adam is
the local Hero
On
a tight and twisty Knockhill circuit the chances for over-taking are
slim. So as the lights went out for Round 15 of the 2008 SEAT Cupra
Championship the entire grid knew a good start was crucial, yet it was
the two Welch Motorsport cars of Daniel Welch (Marriott/Welch Motorsport)
and Carl Breeze (Blue Chip/Welch Motorsport) that made the greatest
early strides. Breeze made a place up alongside David Green (Daniels
Motorsport) at the expense of Jeremy Gumbley (Millionpixeldriver.com/Welch
Motorsport) while up ahead Welch nosed ahead of Robert Lawson as they
went into SEAT Curves. Welch managed to keep Lawson at bay to steal 2nd
place and stormed into the John R Weir chicane for the first time with a
tight procession of Lawson and Martin Byford (AB Glass/Z Speed Racing)
behind him. Incredibly though, local driver Jonathan Adam (Total Control
Racing) had already capitalised on his pole position and within the
first lap had stretched a three second lead over the trio behind him.
While Adam kept pulling away, Lawson looked for a way past Welch,
heading for the inside coming out of Real Radio Hairpin for the next few
laps but being blocked superbly. Byford kept in touch with the pair all
the while, every bit the seasoned hunter waiting for an opportunity…
which came at the halfway point of the race. Pushing hard Welch went
wide coming out of the chicane, sideways on the grass and rolling back
onto the track with reduced speed allowing Lawson to squeeze past him.
Byford’s momentum also meant he had the legs to take advantage too,
using the hairpin to power past the unfortunate Welch into 3rd, which is
where he stayed until the chequered flag.
Meanwhile Breeze had been hustling Green along and a similar looking
turn of events took place. Green went wide at Carlube which meant Breeze
had the speed to take him through the hairpin and start lap 14 in 5th
place. Yet Green didn’t conceded total defeat and managed to fight back
at Breeze, but the experienced Norfolk-based driver held on for a two
place gain over his qualifying position. He was still a long way off
Adam though, the championship challenger finishing the race 11.348secs
ahead of Lawson, with Byford and Welch crossing the line behind him.
Further down the field, Daniel Rowbottom (DRM M-sport) had to retire
from the race with a damaged driveshaft while Andrew Herron (Brian
Herron Plant/JHR) continued to struggle with his car, an apparent lack
of power on the straights keeping him pinned at the back of the grid.
Scottish driver Steve Mitchell (JP Motorsport) finished the race in last
place, but was buoyed by the finish regardless and will aim to gain some
places in front of his supporters in Round 16. But it’s likely to be the
other Scottish driver Adam that most eyes will be on, his track
record-setting pace in Round 15 putting him in great shape for a double
win at the circuit he knows so well.
ROUND 15
1. Jonathan Adam (Total Control Racing)…20:11.724
2. Robert Lawson (Bardon/JHR)…20:23.072
3. Martin Byford (AB Glass/Z Speed Racing)…20:25.939
4. Daniel Welch (Marriott/Welch Motorsport)…20:28.302
5. Carl Breeze (Blue Chip/Welch Motorsport)…20:33.095
6. David Green (Daniels Motorsport)…
Adam
wins two out of two at Oulton Park

Jonathan Adam (Total Control Racing) completed the perfect weekend at
Oulton Park in Rounds 13&14 of the 2008 SEAT Cupra Championship,
recording two wins and two quickest laps. His resurgence looked to be
well on track during qualifying where the reigning Champion made short
work of setting unbeatable pole position times, and he made sure that
those efforts paid off with two convincing victories. Robert Lawson (Bardon/JHR)
is the man Adam is trying to catch though and with two 2nd place
finishes behind Adam, the current Championship leader did a great job of
damage limitation. Lawson will still be heading to Knockhill in a
fortnight with a decent lead in the standings, but Adam’s pace looked
untouchable at Oulton Park so trying to beat him at his home circuit
looks like an incredible task.
Round 13, which unusually took place on the Saturday, had been a lot
about the start. Lawson sat alongside Adam on the front row, but a poor
launch saw both Andrew Herron (Brian Herron Plant/JHR) and Martin Byford
(AB Glass/Z Speed Racing) go around him to tuck in behind Adam after the
first corner. By the end of the first lap though Lawson was back into
3rd at the expense of Herron and had Byford in his sights. Biding his
time Lawson was finally able to capitalise on a Byford mistake at the
Island Bend hairpin to go back into 2nd place, but Adam was too far
ahead to catch by this point, the Yorkshire driver having to settle for
the second step on the podium. Carl Breeze (Blue Chip/Welch Motorsport)
was another driver who had a poor start and despite a valiant fight back
he couldn’t get further back than 7th, despite Jamie Ackers (Total
Control Racing) dropping from 6th to 10th, which gave a serious dent to
his title ambitions. Jeremy Gumbley (Millionpixeldriver.com/Welch
Motorsport) certainly had more to celebrate though, taking an easy 5th
place behind Herron, which was a feat he repeated in the next race.
With a nights rest between the two races,
Round 14 was the chance for those who made poor starts in Round 13 to
make amends. And as the lights went out all fourteen drivers got away
well, Lawson looking like he may challenge Adam into the first corner
but with only a narrow track it was Adam who pushed through first.
Heading down towards Cascades though and Herron was sent sideways into a
spin, the ensuing avoidance of those behind resulting in both Steve
Mitchell (JP Motorsport) and David Green (Daniels Motorsport) having
their races ended early. Herron managed to keep going but had his work
cut out from the back of the pack, especially considering the gap Adam
had already made at the front. A familiar looking sight at the front
soon developed with Adam leading from Lawson who was ahead of Byford,
and Daniel Welch (Marriott/Welch Motorsport) in 4th. Behind them though
David Nye (Daniels Motorsport) then Gumbley were battling for 5th and
young James Appleby (Hardinge Machine Tools) was doing a sterling effort
of holding off a hard charging yet slightly damaged Breeze. Mixed
fortunes followed though as Nye started losing pace allowing Gumbley to
take him while Appleby lost gear selection for half a lap allowing the
rest of the field to pass him. Despite making a place up though Breeze
went wide at Lodge on the last lap to let Daniel Rowbottom (DRM M-sport)
through into 6th which was a further blow to the driver who started the
weekend 2nd in the Championship.
With Adam now not far behind Lawson in the
Championship and Knockhill to come yet it looks like it will be these
two that will battle it out for the title as we head into the final
throws of the season. Byford and Breeze may still have an outside
chance, but it may take more than just superb driving from them to
realise that. And they may even find they’ll have to battle harder now
too as around half a dozen drivers are becoming regular top six
finishers.
Martin Byford: “It was a step forward this weekend from Snetterton. It
was a step forward with the car and I think it was a step forward with
myself. But we need another step forward to be competitive with Lawson
and Adam.”
James Appleby: “A couple of times in the second race Breeze was right on
me but had Rowbottom right behind him. So there was no way he was going
to pass me. It was cracking before that second race, but that wrecked
the whole thing and makes a top six finish almost impossible now.”
Jonathan Adam: “Two wins, two fastest laps and a lap record. It doesn’t
get much better than that. Our tyres were a bit older than Rob’s in
testing, but we did well and felt we would go on to do well this
weekend.”
Robert
Lawson: “The aim of the game is to win races, and we haven’t done that
here. The team are doing well with the car but we haven’t quite found
that sweet spot this weekend.”
Jeremy Gumbley:(pictured) “We did so much driving yesterday
(Saturday) that it took a few laps in the second race to engage your
brain. For a few laps after that though I was driving the car like I’d
stolen it! That last race was ace though, I had another mega start.”
Daniel Rowbottom: “As I keep saying, our start positions have to be
improved. Maybe we’ll have a test day to figure out where we can find
that little extra as there really should be no reason to not be on the
podium now.”

Adam takes two, while Breeze also prospers
In
a three race meeting at Snetterton, following the addition of the
postponed Round 10 from Croft, there were mixed fortunes for the drivers
in the 2008 SEAT Cupra Championship. Jonathan Adam (Total Control
Racing) will grab the headlines, taking two victories in the last two
races, but local driver Carl Breeze (Blue Chip/Welch Motorsport) also
had cause for celebration. With a 1st, 3rd and 4th, Breeze moved up the
Championship standings to leave Snetterton in striking distance of
Robert Lawson’s (Bardon/JHR) lead. Adam is only just behind him though,
while Martin Byford (AB Glass/Z Speed Racing), who is now sat in 4th,
will be keen to make up for a disappointing weekend at the next meeting.
In Round 11, Adam, Lawson and Daniel Welch (Marriott/Welch Motorsport)
all span on the first lap as they tussled for the top spot. Damage to
his steering rack forced Lawson to retire while Adam and Welch managed
to rejoin further down the pack, leaving Breeze the lead. Freddy
Nordström (Plumbertraining.com/Advent Motorsport) made the most of
things too, moving into 2nd place with Byford virtually glued to his
rear bumper. By the end of the 16 laps Nordström and Byford had almost
caught Breeze but his lead was too great and the trio crossed the line
together to secure podium positions, the 2nd place Nordström’s best
finish so far this year. Daniel Rowbottom (DRM M-sport) also looked
impressive making up ten places throughout the race to finish 4th, also
a best result for the season.
The JHR team worked
hard to make sure Lawson’s car was fixed for Round 12, and the
Championship leader aimed to repay their efforts as he pushed Adam on
the outside from the start. Breeze also gave Adam food for thought on
the inside, forcing the Scotsman to block his advances in order to keep
the lead as they hit Rivett straight. Byford had also managed to catch
up to Breeze, who had been squeezed into 3rd by Lawson, but issues with
his car saw him falling back through the pack until he retired, leaving
4th place to Welch, closely followed by Andrew Herron (Brian Herron
Plant/JHR). The top five remained in that order, with Nordström adding a
6th place to his earlier 2nd, but it was Adam who was celebrating the
hardest with another win for the season notched up.
Adam repeated that
feat in the Round 10 race at the end of the day, another strong display
from the front putting him 6secs ahead of Lawson by the time he saw the
chequered flag for the third time. Herron proved his pace again with a
3rd place finish while Breeze and Byford once more found themselves
evenly matched. The two local drivers, both piloting blue Cupras, stuck
to each other throughout the race, their epic tussle imitating their
battle in the Championship. Despite looking though, Byford couldn’t see
a way past his foe and had to settle for 5th place, Breeze coming out on
top in both the race and in his position in the overall points
standings. David Green (Daniels Motorsport) finished the top six,
another driver recording a personal best finish for the season with an
impressive display.
So after a
three-race day at Snetterton, Lawson remains the leading driver in the
2008 SEAT Cupra Championship, but Breeze has jumped up into 2nd place
just 28 points behind him. Adam’s the man on the move though, two wins
at Snetterton putting him just two points behind Breeze and with eight
rounds left to go, including his home circuit of Knockhill, he could
challenge Lawson yet. Byford’s not out of contention either and with the
likes of Herron, Nordström, Rowbottom and Welch all capable of taking
big points, the second half of this season is shaping up to be a
thriller.
Carl
Breeze: “Taking the Snetterton rounds into account I was
consistently the top points scorer which is good. We didn’t qualify well
but managed to turn negatives into positives, and we finished all three
races. The third race I could have been quicker, but I picked up some
damage. My teeth were chattering everytime through the Esses as the car
was vibrating badly!”
Martin Byford: “A podium in the first race was great, but it went
downhill from there. I started P3 in the last race so you should expect
a podium from there. In general we’re underperforming, but we know that
and will look to improve. It was a tough weekend.”
Robert Lawson: “To be fair, I had a bit of bad luck this morning.
It could have been myself, Jonathan or Daniel that went off. Massive
credit to the team though, to get the car back out for the second race.
It was a disappointing first race but two good solid finishes after
that, and in that last race Jonathan drove very well.”
Andrew Herron: “We knew we had the pace all weekend. In the first
race I was unlucky as I got spun, and in the second race I made some
changes to the car that were a mistake. We went back to the original
settings for the third race and it worked but still not able to get near
Lawson or Adam."
Jonathan Adam: “It
was a good weekend. We started poorly, despite qualifying well, but two
wins after that was great. And I think I got a track record in that last
race!”
Robert Lawson: “There was a bit of a wait but it worked out well for me.
You have to be careful with braking zones as it’s easy to lock up your
wheels. It was a case of I was in the position I needed to be in and I’m
chuffed to pieces with the win for the team.”
Freddy Nordström: “Started good, got worse… then got even more worse. I
don’t think it was anything malicious by Rowbottom in the last race, I
think he just lost it. That’s the problem with the grass. After the
first race I thought we had it, but somehow in the second and third we
lost it!”
Daniel Rowbottom: “ It was a bit up and down. We came with a new shell,
the set-up had been off and we struggled in qualifying. Then we made a
leap forward and the first race was good but the set-up for the second
wasn’t. By the third race it was spot on but as I’ve said before if you
qualify at the back you haven’t got a chance of catching the leaders.”

Lawson reigns in Croft rain
Round 9: Croft
After
a brilliantly sunny day for qualifying, race day saw the Croft circuit
drenched with torrential rain, leaving Round
9 of the SEAT Cupra Championship
delayed by over an hour. The early rain had further consequences too, as
timetable
alterations meant that Round 10 could not happen. Robert Lawson (Bardon/JHR)
won’t be complaining
though, having received the hearty cheers of his
local fans from the top step of the podium and enjoying a short
journey home to celebrate
his increased lead in the driver standings.
Round 9 started under the
guidance of the safety car that peeled off after three laps to leave
Lawson heading into
Clervaux as the only driver with a ‘clear view’ of
the track. Behind him the spray created from the carbon fibre rear
diffusers of
these powerful race cars forced windscreen wipers into overdrive as the
drivers concentrated on staying
on track. Andrew Herron (Brian Herron Plant/JHR)
stuck to his JHR team-mate’s tail and had Jonathan Adam (Total
Control Racing) and
Martin Byford (AB Glass/Z Speed Racing) doing much the same to his right
until the finish line
where they crossed it in that order. Carl Breeze
(Blue Chip/Welch Motorsport) couldn’t capitalise on a rare Byford
error so had to settle
for 5th in what amount to a
procession for the top five finishers.
There was plenty of action
further down the field though with James Appleby (Hardinge Machine
Tools/JHR) and
Daniel Welch (Marriott/Welch Motorsport) being the main entertainers.
Welch had pinched Appleby’s 6th
place early on
but a gutsy manoeuvre from young Appleby saw him take it back, going
side by side with Welch along the
start/finish straight and heading into Clervaux with
plenty of opposite lock needed to almost rally cross the Cupra out
of the other side
ahead. At Hairpin on the last lap Welch made a move on Appleby to take
it back and although he
crossed the line ahead, a later ruling on it gave
Welch a one second penalty to hand Appleby 6th
and push Welch
back to 7th . Jeremy Gumbley (Millionpixeldriver.com/Welch
Motorsport) meanwhile took the extra championship
point for most places gained,
having tangled with local driver Dan Stringfellow (Kiss the Fish/West
Suffolk Racing)
and gained from Daniel Rowbottom’s (DRM M-sport) off at Tower Bend.
The JHR team left Croft
certainly the happiest having all three of their drivers finishing in
the top six and Lawson
increasing his championship lead over Byford to 28
points. With a long break now until Snetterton all the drivers will
have plenty of
time to prepare for the second half of the season though which could
mean the likes of Byford,
Breeze or Adam could still have the last laugh.
Carl Breeze: “It was a bit like
follow the leader. Byford went a bit wide, if only I’d been a bit closer
I could have taken
him on the inside.”
Martin Byford: “At least we got
the car back in one piece. It’s hard, hard work when it’s like that, the
diffusers kick up
a lot of spray so it’s difficult to see anything.”
Jeremy Gumbley: “There was a
lot of spray, but I don’t think it was dangerous. I couldn’t see the
chequered flag
though. It would have been good to have the second race as it’s more
time behind the wheel for me and the chance
to get even faster.”
Andrew Herron: “I was extremely
cautious for the first couple of laps and used Robert as a marker. I was
comfy sitting
behind him, if I’d pushed then Adam and Byford could have caught up so I
was happy to settle for a one two
for the team.”
Jonathan
Adam: “I couldn’t see a thing
with the spray. I would have loved to have been Robert out in front.
There’s a fine
line when it’s like that about how much you can push it.”
Robert Lawson: “There was a bit
of a wait but it worked out well for me. You have to be careful with
braking zones as
it’s easy to lock up your wheels. It was a case of I was in the position
I needed to be in and I’m chuffed to pieces
with the win for the team.”
ROUND 9

Adam
takes two
A
race full of incident eventually
saw Jonathan Adam (Total Control Racing) cross the finish line for his
second win of not only the day, but also of the season. The start of the
race had seen a great start from Daniel Welch (Marriott/Welch Motorsport)
who squeezed down the inside of Robert Lawson (Bardon/JHR) but as the
pack went through the first complex disaster struck. Adam received a tap
from behind which knocked him into Welch and sent him spinning, with the
helpless Carl Breeze (Blue Chip/Welch Motorsport) forced off the track
in a bid to avoid collision. Welch managed to regroup and rejoin the
race a little quicker than Breeze who now found himself at the back.
Adam meanwhile had managed to push on into the lead and was closely
followed by Andrew Herron (Brian Herron Plant/JHR) and Martin Byford (AB
Glass/Z Speed Racing) as they sped into the second half of lap one.
Lawson was also still in touch and ruing his poor start, while behind
him Jeremy Gumbley (Millionpixeldriver.com/Welch Motorsport) had managed
to get into 6th place having started way down in 12th. More impressive
though was Welch’s charge through the pack. By lap three Freddy
Nordström had caught up with Gumbley and made his move at Club, only to
find the flying Welch take them both in one swift move, leaving Lawson
in his sights.
Lawson was still a fair way ahead though and had his own targets, 2nd
place via Byford and Herron who had fallen some way behind the leader
Adam. Once again Club proved the talking point, Byford braking late on
the outside of Herron and the pair heading through the chicane neck and
neck. In the tyre smoke and commotion, Lawson took the straight line
through the bends, gaining two places in the process and keeping his
charge towards keeping his position. Meanwhile Herron and Byford had
allowed Welch to get right on their tails, and Welch’s attentions were
firmly fixed on Byford. The two cars ended up side by side through Club
on lap 10 and on the next lap Welch made his move at that eventful
section. Launching through the high curbs, Welch planted himself into
3rd position but the two cars weren’t couldn’t keep going on the lines
their drivers wanted them to without collision. Byford suffered damage
but managed to finish the race still in 4th place while Welch’s injuries
were more serious. He struggled across the finish line on effectively
three wheels but lost places to both Nordström and Gumbley to take a 7th
place.

So with incidents galore, Adam managed to secure a second win in a race
where he was out on his own for much of it. Lawson was afterwards given
an 8sec penalty for inadvertently gaining a two place advantage which
knocked him back down to 4th place meaning Byford gained one position
and picks up the points for 3rd while Herron takes the points for 2nd.
Lawson’s penalty still meant he left Thruxton with a decent haul and
thanks to the misfortunes of others and Adam’s resurgence he actually
increases his championship lead. There are plenty of quick drivers in
the mix now, so Croft may be another meeting where the action is fast
and furious and the racing intense.

As Jonathan Adam
(Total Control Racing) came into the Club section of Thruxton for the
last time in Round 7, Daniel Welch (Marriott/Welch Motorsport) made one
final attempt to snatch the win. Adam had pulled an early lead on the
pack having held off a determined Welch for the first few corners, and
Welch had been chasing ever since. The Welch Motorsport driver had even
had to regain that second spot after loosing out to Robert Lawson (Bardon/JHR),
something he managed at the same corner at the end of the first lap with
a brave dive on the inside. Setting the fastest lap of the race on the
way, Welch continually looked like he may catch a flying Adam, but a
series of small errors meant he never managed to get into a position to
make a serious challenge from. Welch made one last attempt, launching
his Cupra over curbs through Club, but Adam was just too far ahead and
crossed the line for his long-awaited first win of the season.
Behind the front two there had been a fair amount of drama too. Steve
Mitchell (JP Motorsport) had over-stretched his Leon early on, slamming
hard into a tyre wall and bringing out the safety car until the
beginning of lap seven. Carl Breeze (Blue Chip/Welch Motorsport) and
Martin Byford (AB Glass/Z Speed Racing) had both managed to slip past
Andrew Herron (Brian Herron Plant/JHR) before that incident and after
the restart all three drivers kept right with each other. It was only as
they too crossed the finish line that Byford made his classic last
minute grab for places, but despite nosing alongside Breeze, it didn’t
work for him this time. Breeze ended up holding onto 4th with Byford and
Herron in 5th and 6th places respectively. Lawson, who finished 3rd had
driven a reasonably safe race, not looking to compete for 2nd and too
far ahead of Breeze to miss out on a
podium finish which gives him more valuable championship points.
Another notable finish was David Green (Daniels Motorsport) who
finished in 7th suggesting that he’s finding his feet with the SEAT now
and starts Round 8 in 7th too. But it seems that the six drivers of
Adam, Welch, Lawson, Breeze, Byford and Herron have all found the sort
of pace the rest of the pack are struggling for, and with those same
drivers all at the front end of the grid for Round 8 it’s likely to be
the same six taking the top points. Which order they’ll cross the line
at this fast-flowing circuit though is anyone’s guess.

Twin
triumph for lightning Lawson
The
charge of rookie SEAT racer Robert Lawson (Bardon/JHR) shows no signs of
relenting as two convincing race wins at Donington proved. Having
qualified in pole position for both rounds he made sure he capitalised,
crossing the line in each case with seconds to spare between him and his
nearest competitor. From a maximum of 44 points over the weekend, Lawson
took 41 including the extra point for the fastest lap in Round 5 that
also smashed the existing SEAT Cupra Championship lap record. That now
makes four wins from six, with one 2nd place and one 4th to give him a
commanding lead in the Championship. Martin Byford (AB Glass/Z Speed
Racing) also ran well, two late charges giving him a brace of podium
finishes and with a fastest lap bonus point in Round 6 he now sits just
ahead of fellow challenger Carl Breeze (Blue Chip/Welch Motorsport) in
the Championship standings.
Breeze is proving to be one of the
quickest drivers off the line this year and it proved the case again in
Round 5 as he looked to turn his front row start into a race lead,
heading side by side with Lawson into the first turn. But Lawson was
wise to it and kept pushing to head into Craner curves still in
possession of 1st place, Breeze keeping 2nd and Andrew Herron (Brian
Herron Plant/JHR) in 3rd. The trio started creating distance between the
rest of the pack too as Jonathan Adam (Total Control Racing) battled to
defend his position from Byford. Adam, clearly not happy with his car,
was unable to hold Byford off for long, and while the blue AB Glass/Z
Speed Racing car darted ahead looking to make up ground on the front
runners, Adam was left exposed to the attentions of both Daniel Welch
(Marriott/Welch Motorsport) and Dan Rowbottom (DRM M-sport). Again,
Adam’s race pace looked lacking and both Welch and Rowbottom passed the
struggling Scot going on to secure 5th and 6th places respectively.
Lawson meanwhile continued untested at the front going on to secure the
win. Herron however found Byford closing in on him and with one lap to
go was the subject of a fine overtaking manoeuvre through Redgate,
Byford going wide then cutting sharply on the inside and carrying the
momentum through to 3rd place. As he screamed onto the final straight it
looked like he may be able to upset Breeze too, but the Kings Lynn
driver had enough left to cross the line in 2nd, his third podium finish
this year.
Byford clearly enjoys leaving the drama until late, waiting until the
last lap of Round 6 too before making the decisive move. Lawson had once
again pulled well ahead of the rest and was crossing the line in
convincing style for his second win of the day, while the drama unfurled
behind him. Breeze had been pushing for a way past Herron in 2nd place
for much of the race and with the last corner to go he made his move.
But confusion reigned as Breeze went across the grass and Herron dropped
his concentration to let the predatory Byford blitz past the battling
pair in the dying seconds. Moments later Byford crossed the line in 2nd
place, while Breeze could do nothing about Herron taking his first
podium of the season with a 3rd. Elsewhere Adam and Freddy Nordström’s (Plumbertraining.com/Advent
Motorsport) nightmare weekend continued with neither finishing the race,
but both Welch and Rowbottom will take heart from their performances.
Welch had started from the back due to a technical infringement in
qualifying but dodged through the pack into an impressive 5th position,
Rowbottom performing a similar act and coming from 11th to 6th. The mix
of fortunes at Donington was large, but there’s no doubting the talent
that courses throughout the field and with the popular Thruxton circuit
next on the calendar it’s gearing up to be a riveting Championship.
Lawson is the man to beat now, but with other drivers knowing they can
really perform at the fast flowing Hampshire circuit should everything
be in place to allow them, it may be a very different story in Rounds 7
and 8.
Andrew Herron: “We came to this weekend after testing well at Thruxton,
but had a problem during qualifying. If it wasn’t for that we should
have had pole. During the races I had a bit of a problem with my tyres
too but getting on the podium is great. When I was in the Clios I got
one podium finish and it kickstarted from there.”
Martin Byford: “We thought it was going to rain for the second race… but
we got it wrong! I was struggling with the car but just managed to keep
on their (Herron and Breeze) tailcoats. I could see Andrew’s tyres going
off again and when the were side to side down the back straight I could
see what could happen so just stuck my snout in and it paid off. I got a
point for fastest lap too, so that’s one more point for me and one less
for Lawson.”
Robert
Lawson: “The most important thing for me here was to get the wins. The
team’s done a great job and to do this here with so many supporters from
Bardon Aggregates here to watch was great. I couldn’t be happier.
There’s no secret, I’m just doing the best I can and hopefully I’m still
improving as this is still only my third season racing. There’s any one
from about five drivers who can still challenge for the title and their
all great drivers having won championships before, so it’s not going to
be easy.”
Jonathan Adam: “It was a really bad weekend for us. It wasn’t great in
testing on Thursday and if anything it’s got worse over the weekend. I
was really struggling, but we’re going to strip the car right down and
find out what the problem is now.”
Carl Breeze: “I was in second place until I got turned around on that
last corner. I ended up fourth and it’s lucky we didn’t actually have a
similar incident earlier. On a positive note, it’s another thirty points
and I think I’m one point ahead of Byford or thereabouts. We’re also
going to my favourite track next.”
Daniel Rowbottom: “In the second race
it was really enjoyable for the first few laps, but like the first race
I had a problem with grip shortly after that. If we can sort that out
then I’m pretty sure we can get on the podium. At the moment though all
we can really do is pick up points as other drivers drop them.”
Daniel Welch: “I’m actually a little disappointed. I ran out of brakes
on lap three and only had rear brakes to stop. I’m thinking if I’d had
them I could have caught the others up. It’s not too bad, but you can’t
really go home happy with two fifth places

Breeze and
Lawson lead the way
The
second outing for the new SEAT Cupras
at Rockingham saw some fantastic race action as Carl Breeze (Blue
Chip/Welch Motorsport) and Robert Lawson - pictured left- (Bardon/JHR)
took a victory each in Rounds 3&4 respectively of the 2008 SEAT Cupra
Championship. Unusually the races were split over the Saturday and the
Sunday, but it didn’t affect the intensity that they powered into the
first corner resulting in a great spectacle for the fans.
Saturday’s Round 3 was all about Breeze’s storming start, bounding from
2nd place on the grid to squeeze past Jonathan Adam (Total Control
Racing) into the lead. While Breeze went on to stretch his lead and
score a race win, Adam also made some distance between him and the
battle for third place. It was Martin Byford (AB Glass/Z Speed Racing)
who went on to take that spot with Lawson hot on his tail. Daniel Welch
(Marriott/Welch Motorsport) clearly had problems, as Lawson finally
broke his defences on lap 14 of 16, problems that were further
compounded when he was hit in the side at Tarzan. He went on to finish
in a disappointing 10th position, losing valuable Championship points in
the process. New Cupra drivers Andrew Herron (Brian Herron Plant/JHR)
and Daniel Rowbottom (DRM M-sport) both had a happy time, recording top
six finishes and Rowbottom gaining an extra Championship point for most
places gained in the race.
Round
4 had the added intrigue of teams having to opt between wet or slick
tyres. With a damp circuit but no real sign of rain in the air the whole
grid opted for slicks, which made for a slippery start. Lawson didn’t
hang about though, while others looked cautious he flew out of the first
corner and went on to build a lead that was uncatchable.
Byford
(pictured below) may have given him a run for his money but
struggled to get into a position to challenge as he battled with the
quartet of Breeze, Welch, Adam and Gumbley.
Eventually he took his chances and slipped on the inside of both Welch
and Breeze, but it was too late to have any hope of catching Lawson.
Welch improved on his fortunes from Saturday by finishing 3rd, while
Adam kept in the top five with a 4th place. Breeze ended up in 5th but
added to his victory on Saturday it equates to a decent haul of points
from the weekend. While he may have lost his short-lived stay at the top
of the Championship standings back to Lawson, he’s shown he’ll be no
pushover this season. Lawson, Byford, Welch, Adam and Breeze have all
shown how competitive they’ll be, and drivers like Herron, Rowbottom and
Nordström are looking better all the time. With Donington Park on the
menu at the beginning of May, fans of the SEAT Cupra Championship can be
assured of some hot action to get tucked into!
Martin Byford (after Round 4): “It was a cracking race, just a shame I
didn’t get into 2nd a few laps earlier. I was a bit over cautious if
anything and dropped back early on, but I was much quicker on the
infield section. The others seemed more brave in the early corners,
maybe I’m getting old! We haven’t been as strong as we’d like here, but
a 2nd and 3rd is very rewarding. I can’t wait to get to Thruxton for
testing on Tuesday now and I’ll be looking forward to Donington. It was
great to be physically racing the other drivers one-on-one and learning
a bit more about them.”
Jonathan Adam: “It’s a new car and we’re still fine tuning it. We’re
losing out a lot but we know that so we’ll be studying the data and
looking at the car before Donington. If we can dial the car in then I
can’t see why we can’t be right up there. We’ll keep plugging away.”
Robert Lawson (after Round 4): “It was a difficult situation to be
honest, having to make a call on the right tyres. I knew if we went for
slicks it would be slippery so it was a case of getting my head down and
pushing as hard as I dare. The job was done really after four laps then
it was just a case of keeping concentration as you’d look a bit of a
fool losing a big lead in front of a big crowd like this! It was very
difficult on Saturday, Adam did a good job qualifying and I let the team
down by getting a penalty for speeding in the pit lane. Hopefully this
win makes up for that. I’m thoroughly enjoying this Championship!”
Daniel Welch (after Round 4): “That was a good race for me. The car was
a lot better than yesterday as we’d sorted the problem we had. That race
could have gone any way for anyone, I had a good start, but I hate this
place with a vengence. Fortunately the 3rd place turned the weekend
around a bit for us.”
Carl Breeze (after Round 4): “I was struggling a bit with front end grip
in that race, but I’ve scored 32 points this weekend, so as long as I
keep scoring about that every weekend then it should be good. It’s a
strong championship and the five top finishers in that last race are
going to be chasing all season. It’ll be a case of who finishes races.”
Daniel Rowbottom: “All credit to the team, we made a few changes for the
second race and we had a few good, close encounters. We don’t know the
set-up for Donington yet, but at least I’ve driven there before which
means we can concentrate on that rather than learning the track. That’ll
be the first time this season that’s happened!”

It's a Breeze at the Rock
Round 3: Rockingham

A storming start
to Round 3 by King’s Lynn driver Carl Breeze (Blue Chip/Welch Motorsport)
saw him launch from his second spot on the grid to inch past Jonathan
Adam (Total Control Racing) into first position. Adam didn’t give up his
position easily though, putting heavy pressure on Breeze for the first
few laps, but just couldn’t see a way through, eventually crossing the
line in a comfortable second position. Breeze wafted to victory and also
received an extra point for setting the quickest lap time of 1:26.860.
There was plenty of action behind them too, Martin Byford (AB Glass/Z
Speed Racing) having stolen third spot after cutting inside on the first
corner of the race, while Freddy Nordström (PlumberTraining.com/Advent
Motorsport) who had been side-by-side with Adam at the same corner
looked to go outside, but ended up in a spin thanks to some too cool
rear tyres and had to rejoin right at the back of the pack. Robert
Lawson (Bardon/JHR) hadn’t had the best start, dropping two spots after
the first corner and losing another spot to Daniel Welch (Mariott/Welch
Motorsport) after a high speed tank-slapper approaching the same corner
on lap two. Welch soon had Lawson back on his case and defended hard for
much of the race, but on lap 14 Lawson squeezed through at Piff Paff and
Jeremy Gumbley (Millionpixeldriver.com/Welch Motorsport) compounded
Welch’s misery by braking hard and knocking the side of Welch’s car.
Welch ended up in a disappointing 10th place, while Lawson went on to
close the gap on Byford and take 4th spot. Andrew Herron (Brian Herron
Plant/JHR) had driven cleverly to finish in 5th after an early incident
had dropped him down to 9th, while Daniel Rowbottom (DRM M-sport) picked
up the extra point for most places gained, crossing the line in 6th
place from his place on the grid ten spots down from pole. But it looks
like all eyes will be on Breeze in the next race as he starts from the
same position and will no doubt be looking to score a double victory at
Rockingham, to further enhance his newly found Championship lead.

New SEAT Cupra drivers
send out a clear warning
The 2008
SEAT Cupra Championship looks set to be the most competitive yet as two
new drivers to the competition clinched race wins in Rounds One and Two
at Brands Hatch. Robert Lawson (Bardon/JHR) from Richmond, North
Yorkshire romped to victory in Round One and secured second place in
Round Two to give him an early lead in the Championship, while fellow
debutant driver Martin Byword (AB Glass/ Z Speed Racing
- pictured below) of Colchester,
Essex followed up a disappointing first race with a victory in the
second. Reigning champion Jonathan Adam (Total Control Racing) now finds
himself in fourth spot in the Championship after the first meeting of
the season, with 2007 rival Carl Breeze (Blue Chip/ Welch Motorsport)
above him in second and well poised to challenge for this seasons’
title.
The first race of the day was all about tyre choice, with Byford and
Adam both opting for wets. But it was soon clear that the track was
drying and with no sign of more rain the leading pair was soon loosing
places at an alarming rate. Lawson had pushed his slick tyres hard to
keep on their tails in the early damp and it paid off handsomely as he
was able to power past them once their wet tyres began to be
ineffectual. Breeze and Daniel Welch (Marriott/ Welch Motorsport) who
both return to the Championship this year, had also made the right
choice and went on to secure second and third spots respectively behind
the impressive Lawson. Their fellow team mate Jeremy Gumbley (millionpixeldriver.com/
Welch Motorsport) also made a note-worthy debut, having not raced
competitively for eleven years yet still managing a fourth place finish
in his first time back in the driver’s seat. For Byford and Adam it was
all about damage limitation as they saw their promising grid positions
translate into disappointing eight and ninth spot finishes respectively.
It was a different story in Round Two though, Byford and Adam keen to
erase the earlier memories and the Kent weather putting no doubt in the
teams’ minds about what tyres were needed. Byford, starting from pole
position, launched hard and made sure victory was his to loose by the
end of the first lap with Lawson looking to make a similar statement
about second place. Behind them the real action was happening with Welch
making a great start to lead Adam and Breeze. But a problem with Welch’s
car sent him wide at Druids on lap four which allowed not only Adam and
Breeze to pass, but also Freddy Nordström (Plumbertraining.com/ Advent
Motorsport) to sneak past. Adam had soon caught up with Lawson and could
smell a second place, while Breeze was caught between chasing Adam or
making sure the eager Nordström didn’t usurp him from fourth spot. The
attacking and defending quartet of Lawson, Adam, Breeze and Nordström
cancelled each other out for the remainder of the race though, and by
the end of the 22 laps they crossed the line in the same Lawson, Adam,
Breeze and Nordström pattern.
Byford and Lawson (pictured right)
certainly look to be quick in the SEATs, and fellow
new drivers Gumbley, David Nye (DW Nye Limited/ Daniels Motorsport),
James Appleby (Hardinge Machine Tools/ JHR) and Dan Rowbottom (DRM
M-sport) all scored top six finishes over the weekend which suggests
there will be exciting things to come from this season. With Welch and
Breeze also finding their form, Adam will definitely have to work hard
this year if he is to retain his crown.
Martin Byford (after Round 1): “We made a call on tyres and it was the
wrong one. At least we were still the quickest car on the wrong tyres so
we can take a positive from that. I can promise you though, that’s the
lowest I’ll finish all year!”
Martin Byford (after Round 2): “That’s more like it, that’s where we
should be. On the first lap I just made sure I didn’t get in the melee
and it paid off. I got the lap record too so I’m over the moon.”
Jonathan Adam: “It was a disappointing weekend really. In that second
race the one bit where he (Lawson) was quicker was where I should have
been having a go past him. We know what the problem is though. We’ll
certainly be made to fight for it this year, but we’re up for it.”
Robert Lawson (after Round 1): “We made the right call on the tyres,
although initially there was no warmth in them. I had to stick to the
dry lines but push as hard as I dare until the third lap where I knew
they’d have enough warmth to make a move. That’s my first full distance
race in this car so I didn’t know what the tyres would do towards the
end. It was difficult, but a win in my debut race is fantastic.”
Robert Lawson (after Round 2): “That felt good. It was a bit annoying as
I wanted to challenge Martin as I knew I had the speed. But Adam was
putting me under a lot of pressure so I had to defend. The car’s very
good, hopefully we’ll be getting better all the time.”
Carl Breeze: “If someone had offered us a second and a fourth after
qualifying we probably would have taken it. I think that puts me second
in the Championship now and we’ve got two weeks before Rockingham to
have a think about things, so were in a good position.”
